In designing the new Prop L construction, privacy and safety for all students were at the forefront of our plans. Before designing, our architects took time to have planning meetings with staff, parents, and Board of Education members. We also hosted town hall meetings to discuss the design of our new construction with the community.
We want all our students to feel comfortable using a restroom that provides needed privacy and comfort. Gender-neutral restrooms were a topic of conversation in the early planning meetings. The current design and layout of our new construction will provide different choices for students.
Students will have the opportunity to use traditional “boys only” or “girls only” restrooms throughout the buildings, and there will also be banks of single-stall, lockable restrooms for students to use. As a district, we will have the option to label these individual restrooms either for boys or girls. These individual restrooms will provide more privacy than the traditional restrooms (see the sample renderings pictured below). When a building is mapped out, it’s essential to logistically think through where the traditional restrooms are located and take into consideration the distance it will take to walk to an individual boys’ or girls’ restroom or bank of restrooms. The layout of our buildings will provide options for our students and will respect privacy.
The design of the restrooms also provides us with an option for gender-neutral restrooms. Currently, students have access to a gender-neutral restroom, which is a single-stall, lockable room for one person at a time. There is also a private restroom available in the nurse’s office; if we need additional restrooms to support students, we will have the option to provide this service for them.
It is important to note that all Prop L projects are at different phases. We invite you to view the Spoede construction video link above to track our construction progress.
Our Superintendent is in constant communication with the Ladue Schools Board of Education and our construction partners to discuss construction plans and needs.
